Fun

(Because success doesn’t have to be so serious!)

When was the last time you laughed so hard you cried?

Or felt that delicious swoop in your stomach as you swung high in the air, carefree and fully alive?

If it’s been a while, you’re definitely not alone.
This month, I’m dedicating our conversation to fun — because it’s not frivolous, it’s foundational to our happiness, health, and success.
As I often remind my clients, fun isn’t something you earn after the work is done.
It’s something that fuels your energy, creativity, and resilience — the very things that help you reach your goals.

So… what exactly is “fun”?
Fun is that magical place where playfulness, connection, and flow meet — the centre of your personal Venn diagram of joy.
It’s spontaneous, light-hearted, and deeply engaging. Unlike calm happiness, fun has energy — it’s often social, active, and full of laughter.

Why Fun Matters
Having fun — whether it’s through hobbies, adventures, or laughter with friends — is like a mini wellness boost for your whole system.
It:
✨ Builds resilience and adaptability
✨ Reduces stress and tension
✨ Strengthens your sense of connection and belonging
✨ Boosts confidence and self-worth
✨ Helps you navigate tough times — from work stress to life’s big changes

Making Fun a Habit (Yes, Really!)
Fun doesn’t “just happen.” You can create it — intentionally and joyfully.

Here’s how:
1. Put Fun on the Calendar
Don’t wait for a spare moment — schedule it in!
Book that coffee date, dance night, or Sunday walk with friends. Even small moments count.

2. Audit Your Time
Ask yourself:
• What was fun today?
• What was fun this week?
• When did I last feel pure joy?
Notice what drains you and what energises you — then consciously choose more of the latter.

3. Bundle It Up
Pair everyday tasks with joy. Listen to music while cleaning, call a friend on a walk, or light a candle while you journal.

Be Playful (Your Way)
Playfulness isn’t about being silly unless that’s your thing (and if it is — go for it!).

It’s about finding your own version of light-heartedness:
🎵 Sing at the top of your lungs
💃 Dance in the kitchen
🌊 Swim in the rain
😄 Laugh until your cheeks ache
Play games, go on an adventure, or simply do something that delights your inner child.

Reconnect with What Used to Light You Up
Think back to your childhood — what absorbed you so completely that time disappeared?
Climbing trees? Painting? Storytelling? Dressing up?
Revisit those things — or reinvent them for your adult life. Ask family or friends what they remember you loving; their memories can spark new inspiration.

Try Something New (and Be Willing to Be Awful at It!)
Real fun often happens when you’re not trying to be perfect.
Let go of the need to “get it right.” Take that pottery class, try paddleboarding, dance like no one’s watching.
Fun thrives in freedom, not perfection.

Cultivate a “Fun Mindset”
Fun isn’t just what you do — it’s how you show up.
Be present. Smile more. Add colour to your surroundings. Say yes to adventure and connection.
And please — embrace your quirky side!
Your quirks are the spark that make you, you. They’re the gateway to the most authentic fun of all.

Beware the “Fake Fun” Trap
Fake fun distracts you for a moment but leaves you feeling flat or regretful — think mindless scrolling or bingeing shows you don’t even enjoy.
Real fun recharges you. It makes you feel alive, lighter, and more connected.

We each have our own unique ways to experience joy.
So — what lights you up? What creative, playful, mood-lifting things could you sprinkle through your week?

As Martha Beck so beautifully puts it:
“Having fun is not a diversion from a successful life; it is the pathway to it.”

So go ahead — make this week your reminder to have more fun, more often.
Your wellbeing (and your success) will thank you for it.
